Winter weather matting

Keeping the worst of the weather outside

We woke to a covering of snow this morning in Glasgow.

On my journey to work, I saw one car crash (low speed with one car sliding into another stationary one) and two pedestrians slip on the icy pavement.

As a business, keeping your floors dry and not slippery at this time of year is tough.

Entrance mats are part of the solution but what is really required is a change of mindset to make all staff aware of one simple fact.

A WET FLOOR CAN BE THOUSANDS OF TIME MORE LIKELY TO CAUSE A SLIP

THAN A DRY ONE.

Once everyone is aware of this, you can focus on the real challenge and that is to keep water off floors.

Printed or solid colour runner mats have a role to play, a dry mat will remove 80+% of the moisture from a visitors feet. It should be large enough to ensure that it requires at least 2 steps to walk across.

An inexpensive Wet&Dry vacuum cleaner can help to prevent the mat from becoming waterlogged and ineffective.

If you have any real problem areas, consider cotton matting rather than Nylon, they are more absorbent and easy to maintain.

The real breakthrough is in staff training and the focus on keeping floors dry. Check out this checklist for safer floors in your workplace.
